What Is Tar & Chip Paving?

When thinking about paving or repairing a driveway or road, the most common method that comes to mind is asphalt. However, there is a less commonly known option – tar and chip paving. Known also as chip seal, this method is much cheaper and quicker than the asphalt option. Its cost, however, does not reflect the aesthetic quality it brings to any home and its surroundings.

With the availability of various colour options of chipped stone, tar and chip driveways blend beautifully into any surrounding. Add to all that the fact that tar and chip paved driveways require minimal maintenance, this is a method you should consider before refurbishing your driveway!

Tar & Chip Paving Process

Step 1: Preparation

Prior to laying down the tar-and-chip, the surface of your driveway is prepared. Preparation required depends on the surface being paved but generally includes sweeping and blowing to get rid of debris, sealing any existing cracks and repairing the surface, in general, to allow for the settling of a smooth tarmac.

Step 2: Installation

Liquid asphalt is applied to the newly prepared surface with a specialized distributor truck to make sure that the asphalt laid down is consistently layered and is at the right temperature. Next, while the asphalt is still hot, chipped stones are spread so they can easily bind to the asphalt. Chipped stones can be chosen to fit the area surrounding the driveway, giving a natural, aesthetic finish to the whole area. Make sure to weigh up all the lovely colour options and pick the one that complements your home!

Finally, the chipped stones are rolled into the asphalt by a steamroller to fully embed the two. The tar-and-chipped driveway is ready to be stomped upon almost immediately, making it time-efficient and convenient as well as aesthetically pleasing.

Step 3: Maintenance

A tar-and-chip pavement is almost maintenance free. Unlike asphalt pavements, it requires no regular sealing. Furthermore, due to its gravel base, tar-and-chipped driveways provide very good traction for your vehicles since the fraction created by the chipped stones decreases the chance of slippage.  Loose chipped stones might require sweeping back; however, usually, the loosened stones will find their way back into the warm tarmac in hot weather and the driveway repairs itself.

One possible problem is snow plowing. Due to individual chipped stones sticking out of the tarmac, a shovel can damage a section of the pathway. You can avoid this by making sure that the snowplow isn’t making direct contact with the driveway during the process
